Seth Tabatznik put out his second album Awakening Embers last week on Moth Music, and the record has already started finding its audience in the indie folk lane. The London-raised, Western Cape-based musician only began putting music into the world in 2024, but he’s moved quickly: over 200,000 streams, nods from CLASH Magazine and EARMILK for the pre-release singles ‘Shining For Love’ and ‘Choose To Be Alive’, and sold-out shows at Green Note in Camden and Boschendal Estate near Cape Town. His blend of acoustic folk and medicine music leans on warm vocal harmonies, plain-spoken lyrics, and a steady respect for the natural world. Nick Mulvey mentored him during the making of this album, and guitar lessons with Rainer Scheurenbrand shaped the playing style. The result sits comfortably next to the work of Ben Howard, Blanco White, and Gregory Alan Isakov.
Awakening Embers stays focused on themes of the earth, personal repair, and quiet connection, delivered through uncluttered acoustic settings. It opens with the calm, almost prayer-like ‘Dear Nature’ and closes on the more expansive ‘We Are Walking Home’, letting the songs breathe without forcing drama. The lead single ‘Pacha Mama’ moves at a deliberate pace, built on a simple, reliable drum pulse, fingerpicked guitar figures that feel lived-in, subtle shaker rhythm, and Tabatznik’s smooth, storytelling vocals that carry the weight of the words without pushing too hard.
Seth shared: “I don’t have many regrets in life, but after hearing the sound of this album, which was recorded in the studio, I really wish I had now recorded the first album in there rather than at home. This album is sounding amazing and am super excited to be sharing it with the world. It was a lot of fun to put together, one of those processes that just emerged from a flow state effortlessly like it wanted to be born. The whole thing took just a few months from conceiving the songs to completing the mixing.”
