Quirky indie-pop band What If Elephants share ‘Sugar Daddy’ music video

Montreal’s four-piece indie pop band What If Elephants debut their brand new video for ‘Sugar Daddy’. The single is a rhythmically driven tune with delightful harmonies featuring Maya Malkin.

The music video was produced and directed by a new company of two best friends called La Clic, with Carissa Vales heading up production and Chloe McNeil directing the action. Yann Lo Bono stepped in as director of photography.

The video was filmed over a two-day period in Montreal and St-Blaise-Du-Richelieu and it also required the help of Dairy Queen (you will see!) and a nameless hero who helped with the lights on the baseball field. It was established early on that the band wanted to overdo the confidence of the sugar daddy character in the video as well as show that they are not taking themselves too seriously beyond the fourth wall. The ice cream and the bubble gums, all a big nod to the 90s, which is when most of the band grew up.

Said lead singer Joey Langlois, “for this video, we knew we wanted something sugary! It tells a simple story of someone who thinks the key to their partner’s heart is giving the sugar, when it simply isn’t.’

Comprised of singer/guitarist Joey Langlois, Alanna Martin (vocals/keyboards), Justin Wiley (drums), and newcomer, bassist Collin Steinz, What If Elephants channel the divergent musical experiences that make up their individual, musical backstories so fluidly, they simply don’t sound like anyone but themselves. The band were finalists in RBC’s Canada Walk of Fame Emerging Musician Program in 2018 and has also been CBC Searchlight finalists four times with tracks including ‘Candles’ and ‘Middle Ground’ from their 2015 debut EP, Getaway, and have toured extensively on their own and with artists such as Milk & Bone, Port Cities, Mono Whales, and Flara K. The band are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new EP.
