Musicians and siblings Pat Burgener and Max Burgener (who goes by Oddbox) collaborated on a stunning single titled ‘Free’ released on 30 August via Oversey Records. The single is an ode to liberation and self-determination for all. It emphasises the fact that freedom is a universal right for every human, not just a select few, and that everyone should be able to forge the life they aspire to.
We caught up with Pat Burgener about his songwriting process, the vision behind the track as well as what to expect in the future. Stream ‘Free’, while reading the interview below:
For those not familiar with your sound, how would you describe it in three words?
Positive, Vibes, Inspiring
Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?
I try to put myself in a good environment and write about my life experiences, the good and the bad things. Music is like self-therapy for me.
The message behind ‘Free’ is so beautiful and needed right now. What sparked the intention behind the track?
Since the age of five, I felt like freedom was something so hard to reach in life. When I was in school people tried to make me fit in a certain way and told me it was the only way to succeed. I guess since then I was always trying to find a way to be free, to wake up in the morning and do what I want! It’s one of the reasons I started both my sports and musical career, and also the reason why I started living in a van and travelling the world.
Can you tell us about your experience shooting the music video, and the stunning location where it was filmed?
It was the most incredible shoot I’ve ever done! We shot the music video while we were shooting for the next Volkswagen California campaign. All the beaches were private, with beautiful waves, sunsets, and the best crew and catering. It really felt like a Hollywood movie set.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?
Live performance is definitely one of my favourite parts of music, but I love every aspect of it, writing songs and connecting at such a deep level is magic.
Any “strange tales” or things that may have happened during a show that seemed too weird to be true?
When I was performing my last show supporting The Sons Of The East on their European tour, they came up on stage with me and started jamming to my song These Dreams, it was unreal.
Who are three musicians you think the world needs to hear right now?
Sons Of The East, Trevor Hall and Bon Iver.
Break down the news for us: what can we expect from you in the near future?
You’re gonna see me travel a lot, playing shows as part of my first European Headline Tour and competing in the Winter Olympics in 2026! I cannot wait for these next couple of years, very exciting times coming.
