Indie-folk duo Penny & Sparrow have released their latest album, Lefty, which arrived on January 31 via I Love You / Thirty Tigers. Comprised of Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke, the duo have spent the past decade building a devoted following, earning recognition from NPR Music, Wonderland Magazine, and Atwood Magazine. They have toured alongside acts like Josh Ritter and The Shouting Matches, performing at renowned venues such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Stubb’s in Austin, with their reach extending to international audiences in London, Paris, and Berlin.

Having met as college roommates in Austin, Texas, the pair began by covering songs before evolving into songwriters and performers. Their music, drawing inspiration from Simon & Garfunkel, Bon Iver, and Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, blends indie folk, chamber pop, and evocative storytelling. Lefty is a bold 20-track collection recorded in a friend’s garden shed, weaving between acoustic ballads, chamber pop, and glitchy electronica. Songs like ‘Mattering Ram’ and ‘Alphabet’ showcase their lyrical intimacy, while tracks such as ‘Sea Foam’ and ‘Idea Baby’ explore more experimental sounds.

Reflecting on the album, Penny & Sparrow shared, “Lefty is a long collection of both real and imagined moments. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life vignettes, dream sequences, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions, and at least two love letters. Each piece belongs together because they are all extensions of us, tied to the things we love. We are the thread that binds Lefty.”
