Goodnight Moonshine, the duo of vocalist Molly Venter and guitarist Eben Pariser, just released their third full-length album, Business Unusual. Molly, known for her work with the harmony-rich Americana group Red Molly, joins her husband Eben, a skilled player and producer with roots in jazz and earlier bands like Roosevelt Dime. Their songs come across as direct and honest, shaped by years of touring that stopped suddenly in 2020. That change led them to focus on raising their three kids, including twins, and the chaos of family life became the heart of this album. The title captures what it’s like to balance daily survival with making music.
At its core, Business Unusual is a tug-of-war between the demands of family and the hunger to create, exposing the fatigue of chasing dreams while treading water. Eben Pariser’s guitar work breathes, favoring rich tones and gentle improvisation over showmanship, while Molly Venter’s vocals remain rooted and sincere, carrying the weight of lived experience. Most tracks were captured in single takes, with bassist Adam Chilenski and drummer Ryan Sands intuitively locking in, giving the album a raw, lived-in feel. Grammy-winning engineer David Seitz co-mixed the record, preserving its live spirit and clarity. Songs like ‘Kitchen Table’ turn everyday moments into memorable melodies, while ‘Stars’ closes the album with harmonies and sparse accompaniment that radiate a sense of hard-won peace.
Before releasing the album online, Goodnight Moonshine personally handed out nearly 1,000 physical copies to people in their community, making the release feel real and shared. The album takes the everyday struggles of modern life and, while recognizing what’s lost, shows how something stronger and more grounded can come from it.
