Rising pink-haired indie pop sensation Lilly Golden released her debut EP Instar on 15 March via her imprint Lilly Golden Music. Based in the college town of Bennington, Vermont Lilly wrote the EP during her freshman and sophomore years at Bennington College, where she majors in vocal performance and songwriting.

Instar encapsulates the journey of youthful discovery as well as vulnerable and heartfelt emotion. It beautifully balances these aspects in a playful yet authentic manner. The entire EP was recorded in her childhood bedroom, and boldly showcases the highs and lows that take place during young adulthood. The six track EP was produced alongside fellow Bennington student Kai Kennedy. The EP feels like an excerpt out of Lilly’s journal, as she sings about past relationships, missed chances at love and going back to your roots.

The opening track, ‘Confessions’ is a captivating pop anthem about the person you never had the guts to approach, while ‘Cigarettes’ serves as the essence of flirting in a hazy bar, and ‘[redacted]’ explores the childhood pact of marrying your best friend if no one else comes along. ‘5 Senses’ dives into the memories of a past relationship, while ‘Back to the Mountains’ is about finding perspective by returning to your roots. The final track, ‘Alexandria’ laces together pieces of Sappho’s poetry with Lilly’s original lyrics.

Lilly shares: “The number of people who have resonated with Instar upon its release is so touching, especially getting to give the songs to the people who have supported me through the project’s creation. The first song I wrote for Instar was “[redacted]” back in the spring of 2022. I recorded a video and posted it to Instagram and was overwhelmed by the positive response and anticipation for its release (although it would be a while). My lovely roommate had to sit with these songs ear-worming her for years before she could satisfy the itch of listening to them on demand. All this to say, it was a massive labor of love that couldn’t have happened without the support of my friends and fans!”

Instar is the beginning of an exciting journey for Lilly as she boldly shares her experiences, perspectives and desires.
