France-based singer, multi-instrumentalist and evocateur GINTSUGI merges low-fi flavour with post-rock decadence on her second offering Elephant in the Room, released 20th October. After collaborating with Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, Beth Orton) on her first EP and bringing on Yoad Nevo (SIA, AIR), for his artistic touch on the single, ‘OUTSIDE’, GINTSUGI has reshaped her sonic identity. Her musical journey has also seen her perform on stages from Italy, France, to Switzerland and Germany. Additionally, the LP has already received support from EARMILK.
Marked by her striking vocal range, the new LP grapples with the current moment and its prescient struggles. Through a rich body of sweeping strings and lavish synths, this release explores aspects of imperfection with an intimate air of grace, never shying away from nuance or darkness. Borne out of both personal and global crises, Elephant in the Room, is an art-pop odyssey. Using only a native sound library, a Moog, a computer and the accompanying violin of her collaborator, Eymeric Anselem, GINTSUGI navigates the troubled line between vulnerability and acceptance. Blending her ethereal and disembodied choral vocals with rich post-rock orchestral melodies, the album borders on the cinematic. As delicate keys and soft harps trill out hopeful visions, the droning percussion hammers home a darker, industrial undercurrent.
When asked about the album, GINTSUGI had this to say: “If it were a tarot card, [it] would be the Nameless Arcane. Born of desolation and great solitude, it rests on the backbone of things. It’s a direct confrontation with reality. A disappointment, but also the realization that you can sometimes find nourishment where you’ve never looked. And the endurance to carry on, despite everything“.
