Deviating from the societal norms, singer and former American Idol 2020 contestant Sabrina Monique has shared her latest electro-pop gem ‘More Than A Friend’. This track will certainly have your foot tapping along to its charming groove and rhythm, but the lyrical content tackles negative feelings the singer has been grappling with. The United World Records release breathes refreshing energy into the pop sphere, with honest and sincere sentiments throughout this track. The New Yorker has cited the lyrically and vocally powerful works of legend Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone and Dua Lipa as fundamental inspirations for her work ethic. Complete the sentence: My Music is…
Me telling my side of the story…
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
No matter how difficult or impossible something may seem keep going, and at the end of the day, the only opinion you need to listen to is your own.
What is the craziest or best thing that has happened to you as an act/artist so far?
I was on American Idol in 2020! I got to sing with Katy Perry during my audition…It was crazy haha.
Describe your ideal live-set.
My ideal live set would be playing at a venue that I sold out right away to a massive crowd who already know the lyrics to my new song that’s going to drop later that night.
If you were to organise a festival, who would be on your dream line up (alive or dead)?
Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars, H.E.R, Adele, Ariana Grande, Labrinth, Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Tiesto, Willow Smith.
What mood are you trying to evoke with your music?
I think each song is different and evokes its own emotion. I normally write ballads or more sombre songs/lyrics. I then like to use what has hurt me and turn it into something fun or happy as a way to release or distract from these emotions. Almost the same way people distract themselves from feeling certain emotions.
What inspires you outside of music?
I love to paint. I do resin paint pours to express creativity and often times a good paint session will inspire a new song idea or melody. It helps me get into a creative zone especially if I have been struggling or blocked.
If it was your last day on Earth and you knew it, what would you do?
I wish I could say something cool but realistically…if it was my last day on Earth and I knew it I would 100% be with my Mom. She is my number one inspiration and the driving force behind everything I do. I am so grateful that she has always supported me and my music. She encourages me to keep going and never stop chasing my dreams. I’d probably buy her something really extravagant and pay it off quickly before I peace out.
Say something inspirational to your fans in closing.
No one’s path is linear and everybody’s will look different. The worst thing you could do is get down on yourself while you’re trying to forge your own. If something is difficult or feels impossible I can assure you it is most likely worth it, so keep going. The grass is always green where you water it.
