American indie-rock legends Death Cab For Cutie have just released the second single from their upcoming album ‘Thank You for Today’, which is scheduled to be released on the 17th of August this year. The band’s last album, Kintsugi was released in 2015 and band creator and frontman Ben Gibbard commented on the album, “There are threads in this one that connect back to our earliest stuff that people love.” While Gibbard was hoping that their 2015 could win back some of Death Cab for Cutie’s original fans, it seems that the new album also has a great deal of going back to the band’s original sound, as well as some personal nostalgia in the meaning behind the lyrics of the first two releases.
The lyric video for ‘I Dreamt We Spoke Again’ was released just this week and already the top comment on this video release calls Death Cab for Cutie, “the most underrated indie band of all time”. The new single brings us the same wistful melodies from Gibbard’s ever-familiar crooning vocal chords that we’ve all grown to love from this band, complete with perfectly placed synths and clean guitar riffs. The opening track of ‘Thank You for Today’, ‘I Dreamt We Spoke Again’ is a haunting, with the lyrics calling after an ex-lover, just out of reach; Gibbard sings, “I dreamt we spoke again / It had been so long my mind filled in the blanks / I dreamt we spoke again / It had been so long your voice was like a ghost in my head”.
Although this is the band’s first album released in three years, they have been anything but dormant, with two new band members, Dave Depper and Zac Rae, joining their touring lineup as well as a release of a recording of their first show ever to celebrate Death Cab for Cutie’s 20-year anniversary. The group have also recently announced a tour in support of the new album, so we are pleased to hear that they will be performing and making music for a while to come.
