Plain Mister Smith bursts back onto the scene with his second album, Bric-a-Brac Attack, which landed this past weekend via Amelia Records. Renowned for his chameleon-like musicality, he once wielded a guitar with Canadian darkwave band Moev and now lends his cello to the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra. As Plain Mister Smith, his genre-blurring sound has turned heads at NPR Music, 1883 Magazine, Wonderland Magazine, CLASH Magazine, NOTION, Under The Radar, Earmilk, METAL, Noctis Mag, Atwood Mag and more. Splitting his time between Vancouver and London, he crafts indie-folk landscapes where razor-sharp lyrics meet a restless, searching soul.
The album opens with the luminous ‘Grindavik’, a track that immediately envelops the listener in a gentle, reflective haze. Acoustic guitars shimmer as Plain Mister Smith retraces his steps to the Icelandic town of Grindavík, a landscape recently transformed by volcanic drama. The song weaves vivid storytelling with a haunting sense of longing. Relaxed, groove-soaked drums anchor the fluid chords, creating a feeling that is both intimate and expansive. Guest artists Jordan Klassen and Kitt weave in even more depth and emotion.
Plain Mister Smith shared: “The recent volcanic eruptions in Grindavik show the earth in distress, and are an analogy for a relationship in distress. In the same way I hoped the fissures in the earth would meld and heal, I also hoped the fissure in the relationship would heal.”
