Plain Mister Smith released his new single ‘Dream To Be Free’ featuring Jordan Klassen on February 6, 2026 through Amelia Records/Symphonic. The track, which debuted on Spill Magazine, marks the fourth preview from an upcoming full-length album scheduled for spring 2026. The Vancouver- and London-based artist first gained recognition as guitarist in the influential Canadian darkwave group Moev and currently performs as cellist with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra. Under his solo project, he has earned steady acclaim across platforms like NPR Music, Wonderland Magazine, CLASH Magazine, NOTION, Under The Radar, Earmilk, METAL, Noctis Mag, and Atwood Mag, building a dedicated following for his distinct take on indie-folk and psych-rock.

‘Dream To Be Free’ moves between contemplative and lightly playful moods with a confident touch that should appeal to anyone into Death Cab for Cutie, The War on Drugs, or Pavement. Delicate, shimmering keys sit alongside restrained, off-kilter drums while layered instrumentation shifts in and out, creating space for the two vocalists’ subdued, affecting delivery. The arrangement evokes blurred city lights passing by, a half-remembered scene carried by melody and texture rather than force.

Plain Mister Smith shared: “‘Dream to be Free’  is a mesmeric reflection on a decades old trip to Kyoto where memories came flooding back – how such a trip to a far away place can seem like an ultimate act of freedom, or it can be a more subtle escape from home. This trip took place during Diamonji time, which is when locals light giant bonfires aflame on the hills around Kyoto, to guide the spirits back to the spirit world. In a way this trip felt like a return to a source of re-birth.”
