A delicious blend of electronic infusions, Ormiston’s EP Remix Hammer Down will have you under a spell with its retro-infused mood. Released via Lisbon Lux Records, the EP includes indie, chillwave and french house remixes of songs taken from Ormiston’s a.k.a. Nicola Ormiston’s previous album of the same name. Growing up in a musically-orientated community, Ormiston has been drawn to feel-good indie-influenced music from a young age, citing Tame Impala and MGMT as key influences to his craft. Whether you are driving through the streets on a sunny afternoon or taking a walk on the beach, this latest EP embodies the joy that can come with these simple pleasures. We asked Ormiston a few questions about his latest work below.

Featuring several remixes, what are your thoughts on having your original works remixed?
It’s awesome to see other producers and artists’ creations with some of my compositions. It really gives the tracks a new light.
Your indie-electronic sound is a highlight of each track on this latest EP. What other genres would you like to combine with yours in the future?
Right now I’m really inspired by guitar and real drum sounds, I feel like this is certainly something you’ll hear more in my music in the future. A bit more of that “Band” feel, that indie essence, trying to bring more of an organic aspect to this project is definitely a goal of mine for the next phase of this project.
Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?
Creating with my friends from high school, not overthinking, just pure passion and joy! We would hang out late in the basement of a friend’s house. I don’t know if it was really good, but we just enjoyed ourselves so much.
Please tell us more about how your latest release/project was conceived.
It’s a remix EP from my debut album “Hammer Down”. Three awesome artists (Fred Falke, Das Mortal and French Fox) put in a great effort to complete the mini record.
Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?
I try to keep it simple and make every note and tone count. The less the better. I used to layer a lot and it all becomes too buried away. Now I try to make a simple idea shine that speaks volumes.
How much do you invest in how your music is received upon release?
I’m pleased! Can’t take it for granted and just enjoy every second of it.
What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?
I had a song featured during the NHL Hockey playoffs, which is a big deal in Canada.
Are there any key non-musical influences on your sound and creative process?
Definitely, life experiences and relationships have a direct impact on me as a person. I try to stay myself as much as possible in my music, so I’d have to say that a lot of what impacts me in my personal life is translated somehow into my music.
